Télos

History

a brief overview of the history of Télos

The first intelligent creatures on Télos were the Feroenae, a salamander race who dwelt in the ages before the rotation of Télos had become fixed. With the slowing of the planet's rotation, and the lengthening of its days and nights, they first took to hibernating during the long nights -- being creatures more of the heat than the cold -- but at length the heat of the day became too great even for them, and they began to die out. Only round the northern and southern poles was the climate hospitable enough for them to survive. They took to living in caverns in the vast mountain ranges, but the harshness of their existance in their increasingly inhospitable planet slowly extinguished their flickering intelligence.

As the planet's rotation finally slowed to a halt, and a band of inhabitable land emerged from the climatic chaos, two intelligent species emerged, one in the south and one in the north.

In the north were the Uengoelis, barely intelligent, but exhibiting a kind of low cunning and the ability to communicate -- albeit haltingly -- with one another, generally for the purpose of hunting. They inhabited caverns high in the mountains of the north polar regions, and did not spread very far from their until their conquest by the other species.

That other species was the Demoenae, who originally appeared in the south pole, where they established the first true civilisation on Télos, and the ruins of whose first city still stands crumbling and ice-rimed in the low mountains of the polar regions.

As the planet became fixed in its rotation, the climate of the poles became colder, and the Demoenae slowly began migrating northwards. The narrow band of inhabitable land meant that they split inevitably into two, one moving into the spinward regions, the Medrálios, the other into the trailing regions, the Múralongrad.

In the Múra, migration was slow. The mountain ranges of the south extended much further north, and the Demoenae dwelt for long ages in the caverns that wound beneath the mountains and that preserved something of the heat of the planet's core.

In the Medra, however, the mountains quickly fell away, and the Demoenae found lands vastly more hospitable than those they had left behind. Their numbers increased rapidly, and they soon spread out through most of the southern lands

Five main groups of Demoenae emerged. The foothills of the southern polar mountains were settled by the Árlichengu. To the east, the Meghrúst tribes settled amongst the pine forests and mountains that led towards Scíra, the icy starward side of Télos. South of the Árlichengu were the Telústo, who settled in the lands down to the first of the inland seas. The swamps and islands of the sea were settled by the Egora, whilst the jungles to the north and west of the sea became the home of the Múndrauga.

The main races of Télos

The names in parentheses are the names of the spoken languages. Where no names are specified, the name of the race served as the name of the language as well (just as 'English' is the name of the language spoken by the English).

Employing a special name for their language was a trait amongst the Medra tribes, except for the Meghrúst and the Telústo.
