This account of Medísca is related as if from the fourteenth century AE (After the Empire), at a time when Medísca was somewhat similar to Earth during the latter half of the nineteenth century, though the presence of magic in Medísca means that there were some notable differences.
It is also related (largely) from the point-of-view of the country of Ardegn, which was one of the most significant and powerful nations during the fourteenth century. The names of most other places and people are given in the form used in Loegare, the main language of Ardegn. The same applies to the descriptions and orthographies used for other languages of Medísca, which are given as if written by an inhabitant of Ardegn.
Two events form the backdrop to Medíscan history. One is the fall of the Shard, which flooded Medísca with magic, and also caused the emergence of a multitude of intelligent race; the other is the rise and fall of the Scarlet Empire, which temporarily dominated most of Medísca, and whose collapse resulted in consequences which are still reverberating.
About the Shard
The Shard was a portion of the Crystal of Romoene, the jewel from which the universe of Romoene was born. About 1 million years before the 'present day', the Shard crashed down into the area subsequently known as the Triad. The whole of Medísca was flooded with sorcerous energy, and several races of creatures that came close to the Shard were transformed by it, chiefly by the enhancement of their intelligence.
About the Scarlet Empire
The rise of the Scarlet Empire marks the beginning of recorded history in Medísca. Ruled by the goddess-queen, Berenice, it grew to encompass most of the world, and only fell when Berenice died, five hundred years after the founding of the empire. Everywhere in Medísca can be found the ruins of the Empire's castles and towers, and the politics of Medísca is still influenced by fear of, or secret admiration for, the memory of the Scarlet Empire.
The Intelligent Species of Medícia
Unlike Earth, which only has one known intelligent species, Medísca boasts a surprising number of them. There are only four dominant ones, though, these being the Medícae, who are thought of throughout this site as 'humans'; the Saeru, a long-lived, philosophic race somewhat akin to the current (post-Tolkien!) concept of elves; the dwarf-like Khoradni; and the S'Seriakht, a reptilian race who are possibly not native to Medísca.
- Of course, there are those who claim otherwise, that there are at least three different intelligent species on Earth. Personally I beg to differ. The mice are not native to Earth, and the intelligence of humans has definitely been called into question. Thus, the dolphins are the only indisputably intelligent species. QED.
